Melea Single Estate Joins the Hive
We’re really excited to reveal the latest additions to Melea – our highly successful range of organic wines. Melea Single Estate is made by a small, family-run winery in DO Terra Alta that specializes in wines made from the local Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Tinta grapes. This new range of premium wines includes a white made from 90% Garnacha Blanca and 10% Viognier and a red made from 80% Garnacha Tinta and 20% Syrah.
We believe under-the-radar DO Terra Alta to be one of the most exciting places in Spain for sourcing reasonably priced wines of exceptional quality. As its name suggests, Terra Alta is a mountainous, inland region, located in the Ebro valley around 40km from its mouth. It is protected from the Mediterranean by the Ports de Tortosa-Beceite coastal mountain range. Vines grow here on slopes and terraces, among olive groves and almond trees, making it a haven for biodiversity.
All the grapes come from the winery’s own 28ha of organic vines, which grow on varied clay and limestone soils at 375-425m altitude. The grapes remain healthy due to the warmth of the Mediterranean sunshine and the lack of rainfall with an average of only around 400mm per year. The vineyards are strongly affected by the dry Cierzo wind, which comes from the interior, and the Garbinada, which blows from the Mediterranean on hot summer afternoons bringing humidity to the vineyards and reducing stress at the end of the ripening cycle.
Melea was the first Spanish wine brand to become a member of 1% for the Planet – a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions. As part of the organic range, the equivalent of 1% of the gross sales of Melea Single Estate will go to charities that support biodiversity and promote the use of organic farming, avoiding the use of agrochemicals that harm bees and other pollinators. Since its launch in 2020, Melea Organic has donated almost $3,500 to charities including The Bee Conservancy and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.
