La Escapada re-launches in homage to Barcelona

An “escapada” isn’t any old journey or escape. It’s a one-off chance to break away. A refreshing weekend away from the ordinary.


And likewise, La Escapada is no ordinary Cava. It is made from grapes grown on the hillsides to the west of Barcelona, a city that’s also the perfect destination for an “escapada” or mini-break. So when we decided to overhaul the labels of this premium Cava, we briefed the designers on ensuring that the labels clearly reflect the style and heritage of Spain’s most cosmopolitan and creative city.


The result is a label that depicts the iconic form of Gaudi’s masterpiece – the

Sagrada Familia – a popular tourist attraction and a representation of the fact that the best things come to those who wait. Like cava – which has to be bottle fermented and painstakingly turned while being aged on the lees for at least 9 months – the complexity of the Catalan capital’s cathedral means that it has taken more than several lifetimes to build. In fact, construction is still underway, and it is not expected to be completed until 2026, the centenary of the architect’s death.


The label also features the word Barcelona, as the winery is located in the Comtats de Barcelona sub-region. Cava is of course synonymous with the Condal city, where locals flock to Xampanyerias to enjoy tapas washed down with a flute or two of bubbles. La Escapada evokes the feeling of leisurely sipping a glass on a terrace or at a bar after a busy day working or sightseeing.


La Escapada Brut is made from a classic blend of native cava grapes – Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo – aged for 12 – 15 months in the bottle. It displays the perfect blend of crisp clean apple and lemon fruit, with the notes of brioche from lees ageing. The rosé is made from local red grape Trepat. Aged for a minimum of 12 months, it is bright and lively with fine bubbles and a hint of sweetness to balance the refreshing natural acidity.


Both wines are now classified as “Cava de Guarda”, the new name for sparkling wines from the region made using the traditional method and aged in the bottle for a minimum of 9 months.


Cava continues to see record growth, with total Cava sales up 2.35% from January to September 2023, as consumers all over the world recognize it for characterful and refreshing traditionally made sparkling wines.
