James Suckling awards high scores to a trio of organic additions to the Long Wines portfolio
Born in the USA and resident in Hong Kong, James Suckling is one of the most influential and respected wine critics in the world. With decades of experience, his scores and tasting notes hold significant weight in the wine sector, so we are always thrilled to get scores of 90 points or more from this esteemed expert.
We’re particularly excited in this case as they are going to wines that are not only organic but have also been launched relatively recently: Clos del Bou 2021 from DO Priorat, De Pró Organic Brut NV from DO Cava and Melea Single Estate white 2022 from DO Terra Alta.
- Clos del Bou Organic Red 2021, DO Priorat- 91 points:
Leading the pack is Clos del Bou 2021, created by Josep Gomez in the DO Priorat. Gomez’s family used to own a wine shop and tapas bar; but founded the winery in 1995. His passion for the vines, which are certified organic and managed using ancestral biodynamic principles, shines through in the wine, which has garnered an outstanding score of 91 points from James Suckling. The tasting note reads: “I like the mineral clay undertones to the chocolate, berry, sage and coffee cream aromas. Succulent and delicious, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a full body. Zesty hints at the end. From organically grown grapes.”
- De Pró Organic Cava Brut NV, DO Cava – 90 points:
Continuing the string of success is the De Pró Organic Cava NV, which has been awarded an impressive score of 90 points by James Suckling. This new sparkling wine showcases Long Wines’ commitment to organic winemaking practices while delivering exceptional quality. Crafted using traditional methods, De Pró Organic Cava NV enchants the senses with, “blanched almonds, apricots, lemons, honey and brioche on the nose. It’s creamy and medium-bodied, with soft and rounded bubbles, and a gently honeyed finish.
- Melea Single Estate White 2022, DO Terra Alta – 90 points:
Completing the trio of outstanding organic wines is the Melea Single Estate White 2022 DO Terra Alta, which also received a noteworthy score of 90 points from James Suckling. Hailing from the distinguished Terra Alta appellation, this white wine exemplifies the region’s unique terroir. A blend of carefully selected local grape varieties – Garnacha Blanca and Viognier – Suckling’s tasting note reads as follows: “ This has aromas of white strawberries, apples, apricots and lemons. Crunchy and fruity, with a medium body and fresh, bright finish. 90% garnacha and 10% viognier. From organically grown grapes.”
