Fortaleza del Rey upgraded for fresher fruit flavour, lower alcohol and enhanced sustainability
One of our most successful off-trade brands, Fortaleza del Rey has amassed sales of almost half a million bottles across Europe. After an upgrade to the labels a few years ago by leading Spanish label designer, Marta Lojo, we decided to take a look at the liquid in the bottle.
“We put the wines under the microscope, as we constantly do with our own brands, and decided to make some changes to see how we could add more value without this affecting the price,” William explains.
“We tasted samples from a number of wineries before opting to work with one of our partners located in Aragón. The climate gives great ripeness and fruit intensity with balanced freshness, providing great varietal wines at very competitive prices.
In line with market trends looking for less alcoholic, fresher wines, we also reduced the alcohol of the red to 12.5%,” William continues. “The wines also now sport the SWfCP logo (Spanish wineries for climate protection,) adding credibility to the sustainable messaging. We’ve found that the demand for sustainable wines is growing, and in some areas is even greater than that for organic wines.”
The white is now also 100% Chardonnay rather than an Airén blend, the rosé is made from the local Garnacha grape and the red is made from Spain’s most widely planted red variety, Tempranillo.
